The Bangladesh High Court has directed the government to urgently address escalating violence targeting the Hindu community. This comes amidst growing concerns over the safety and security of religious minorities in the country.
Petition Filed to Ban ISKCON and Declare a State of Emergency
On Wednesday, a petition was submitted to the Bangladesh High Court, demanding a ban on the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The petition highlighted ISKCON’s alleged involvement in activities linked to recent unrest and violence against Hindus. Additionally, it urged the court to enforce a state of emergency in Chittagong and Rangpur, two regions heavily affected by protests and social instability.
The filing called attention to the vulnerability of the Hindu community, stating that immediate action was necessary to prevent further violence and unrest. These calls were made against a backdrop of growing demonstrations and violent incidents in various parts of Bangladesh.
High Court Seeks Detailed Report on Government Action
In response to the petition, the High Court has demanded an explanation from the government regarding ISKCON’s recent activities and their role in the unrest. The Attorney General, Md. Asaduzzaman has been instructed to submit a detailed report by Thursday, outlining the steps taken to address these concerns.
The directive was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury. The decision followed a submission of two newspaper articles on ISKCON, presented by Supreme Court lawyer Moniruzzaman. The bench emphasized the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of religious minorities, urging the government to adopt a proactive approach itoresolving the crisis.
Arrest of Hindu Monk Chinmoy Das Triggers Nationwide Protests
The arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 25 has ignited widespread unrest across Bangladesh. A prominent figure advocating for the protection of minority rights, Chinmoy Das has been accused of sedition and denied bail.
This arrest sparked immediate outrage within the Hindu community. Demonstrations erupted nationwide, particularly in Chittagong and Rangpur, with protesters demanding his unconditional release. However, protests outside the Chittagong court escalated into violence, leading to the death of a lawyer, allegedly due to mob violence. The clashes also leftover 20 individuals injured, further intensifying tensions.
Chinmoy Krishna Das had previously organized multiple protests to draw attention to attacks on Hindus and other minorities. His arrest is seen by many as a targeted attempt to suppress his activism, leaving religious minorities feeling increasingly insecure and vulnerable.
ISKCON Condemns Arrest, Calls for International Assistance
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has strongly condemned Chinmoy Das’s detention, describing it as an attack on minority rights. In a statement, ISKCON urged the international community to intervene, calling for the United Nations to step in and address the systemic persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh.
“The ongoing oppression of minorities in Bangladesh is unacceptable,” said an ISKCON spokesperson. The organization stressed that the international community must take immediate action to prevent further violations of human rights and ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.

India Responds with “Deep Concern”
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement on Tuesday expressing grave concern over the ongoing violence in Bangladesh. The statement highlighted the recurring attacks on Hindus and other religious minorities, citing numerous documented cases of arson, vandalism, looting, and the desecration of temples.
“These incidents are deeply troubling and undermine the safety and security of minority communities in Bangladesh,” the MEA stated. The ministry condemned the use of force against peaceful Hindu protesters and called on Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minority rights, including their freedom to peacefully assemble and express dissent.
Bangladesh Pushes Back Against India’s Statement
In a swift response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh criticized India’s reaction, llabellingit an interference in internal affairs. In an official statement, the Bangladeshi government expressed dismay, stating that Chinmoy Krishna Das’s arrest was based on specific legal charges unrelated to his religious or community affiliations.
“It is regrettable that certain parties have misinterpreted the arrest as a religious issue. This misrepresentation undermines the harmonious relationship between our countries,” the statement read.
The Bangladeshi government also asserted that the Indian response failed to acknowledge the long-standing efforts of the Bangladeshi authorities to foster unity and protect people of all faiths. It further stated that such comments could harm the spirit of friendship and understanding between the two nations.
Rising Tensions Leave Minority Communities Vulnerable
The events surrounding Chinmoy Das’s arrest and the subsequent protests have spotlighted the fragile situation of religious minorities in Bangladesh. The Hindu community, which has frequently been the target of violence, is now demanding stronger protections from the government.
Observers warn that unless decisive action is taken to address the grievances of minorities and curtail escalating violence, the unrest could deepen, straining communal harmony and Bangladesh’s international relations.
