BJP-Led NDA MLAs Demand Comprehensive Action Against Kuki Militants in Manipur

In the wake of escalating violence in Manipur, legislators from the BJP-led NDA alliance have called for decisive measures to tackle the ongoing unrest. A collective resolution, signed by 27 MLAs, demands a large-scale operation against Kuki militant groups held responsible for recent violent incidents in the Jiribam district.

Call for Immediate Action and NIA Investigation

During a meeting held on Monday night, the lawmakers strongly urged authorities to act within a week following the tragic deaths of three women and three children in recent attacks. They emphasized that Kuki militant groups should be designated as an “unlawful organization” within seven days. Additionally, the legislators requested that the investigation into the incidents be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure thorough and impartial scrutiny.

Reassessment of AFSPA Imposition

The MLAs also pressed for a review of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the region. This demand aligns with a directive issued on November 14, reflecting concerns over the effectiveness and impact of the act in addressing the state’s security challenges.

Legislators Threaten Further Action

The BJP-led alliance members stated that if their demands are not addressed within the stipulated timeline, they will seek public consultation to determine their next steps. This highlights the growing frustration among state legislators over the government’s handling of the situation.

Condemnation of Property Attacks

The MLAs unanimously condemned recent attacks targeting properties of ministers and legislators. They assured that legal action would follow, based on the findings of a high-powered committee established to investigate these incidents.

Commitment to Restoring Peace

In a statement released by the chief minister’s secretariat, assurances were given that both the state and central governments are committed to restoring peace and normalcy in the region. Authorities have promised to take all necessary steps to address the escalating tensions.

Absenteeism at the Meeting

Out of the total BJP-led NDA MLAs, seven members cited medical reasons for not attending the meeting, while 11 others failed to provide explanations for their absence. This lack of full attendance has raised questions about the coalition’s unity and commitment during the crisis.

Congress Criticizes Handling of Manipur Crisis

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh weighed in on the situation, criticizing the lack of effective leadership in Manipur. He pointed out that a recent meeting convened by Chief Minister Biren Singh in Imphal was attended by only 26 of the state’s 60 MLAs, with minimal participation from allied parties.

Ramesh highlighted that of the 26 attendees, four were members of the National People’s Party (NPP), whose national president has already expressed withdrawal of support for the current chief minister.

Questions Raised on Union Home Minister’s Role

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jairam Ramesh questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s role in managing the crisis. He criticized the apparent lack of federal support for Chief Minister Biren Singh and accused the central government of outsourcing its responsibilities. Ramesh wrote, “The writing on the wall is clear. How long will the people of Manipur endure this excruciating agony while the Union Home Minister remains unresponsive?”

The Way Forward

The escalating situation in Manipur calls for swift and decisive action. As political tensions deepen, both state and central governments face mounting pressure to address the root causes of unrest, restore public trust, and bring peace to the region. The coming days will reveal whether the demands of the BJP-led MLAs lead to tangible outcomes or if further turmoil awaits the troubled state.
