The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to announce its new Chief Minister (CM) for Haryana today. A meeting of the BJP Legislative Party will take place in Panchkula, where senior party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will be present. During this meeting, the party’s central observer will assign a senior MLA the role of proposer.
This proposer will officially suggest the name of Nayab Singh Saini, after which all the MLAs are expected to endorse his candidacy unanimously. The selection of the proposer is typically made ahead of the meeting, with tradition dictating that a senior MLA usually takes on this role. At this point, there is no speculation or uncertainty around the selection of Nayab Singh Saini for the Chief Minister’s position.
Beginning of the New Government Formation in Haryana
Today marks the first step in forming a new government in Haryana. The BJP’s elected MLAs will gather at the party office in Panchkula to choose their leader in the presence of central observers Amit Shah and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Once the legislative party leader is chosen, that individual is expected to assume the role of Haryana’s Chief Minister.
Before the formal voting process, all the BJP MLAs will have breakfast with Amit Shah and Mohan Yadav. Following this informal session, the process to elect the new leader will begin. The BJP has already instructed all 48 of its MLAs to stay in Chandigarh for the next two days to ensure a smooth process.
Naib Singh Saini Likely to Be Unanimously Chosen
BJP leaders have confirmed that the Legislative Party meeting is scheduled to take place around 10 AM. Prominent leaders such as Naib Saini and BJP’s Haryana state president Mohanlal Baroli have already arrived at the party office to attend the meeting. There is little room for doubt about Saini’s selection as the new Chief Minister. In fact, the BJP campaigned for the recent elections with Saini as their main face, and during a workers’ meeting in Panchkula, Amit Shah made it clear that if the BJP were to form the government, Saini would be named Chief Minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also backed Saini in his rallies, showcasing him as the party’s CM candidate. Following the BJP’s significant electoral victory, Saini’s standing within the party has further solidified, and his name is the clear favourite among the top leadership.
Party United Behind Leadership Decision
BJP MLA from Hodal, Harinder Singh, emphasized that the entire party stands united behind whatever decision the leadership takes. His statement echoes the broad consensus that seems to have emerged within the party regarding Saini’s appointment.
Amit Shah’s Crucial Role in the Process
Amit Shah’s presence at the meeting has significant implications. Last year, tensions arose when Nayab Singh Saini was proposed as the replacement for then-CM Manohar Lal Khattar. Senior leader Anil Vij, who had his own ambitions for the post, expressed displeasure by walking out of a meeting in protest. Additionally, Rao Indrajit, another prominent leader within the party, has frequently put forth his candidacy for the CM position.
To prevent such internal disputes from escalating, the party entrusted Amit Shah with overseeing the selection process as an observer. This role is not new to him; Shah played a similar role in 2022 during the Uttar Pradesh legislative party meeting, where he facilitated Yogi Adityanath’s selection as CM.

Next Steps: Government Formation
Once the leader of the legislative party is formally chosen, a claim to form the new government will be submitted to the Governor. Along with this claim, a list of ministers who will be sworn in the following day will also be provided. Once the Governor receives this information, they will invite the newly elected Chief Minister and the ministers to a swearing-in ceremony. This event is scheduled to take place on October 17 at Dussehra Ground in Panchkula.
High-Profile Guests Expected at the Swearing-In Ceremony
BJP’s state president, Mohan Lal Baroli, has confirmed that 37 special guests, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be in attendance at the swearing-in ceremony. These guests will also include Union Ministers, key figures from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Chief Ministers from other states, and Deputy Chief Ministers.
The program is expected to begin at 11 AM and wrap up by 1 PM. To ensure the ceremony goes off without a hitch, a meeting was held at Haryana Niwas in Chandigarh, chaired by BJP’s National General Secretary, Vinod Tawde. CM-designate Naib Singh Saini, along with senior officials from the state, also attended this planning meeting.
Different responsibilities have been assigned to various officials for the smooth execution of the event. Some officials will be in charge of welcoming Chief Ministers and other dignitaries arriving from different states, while others will oversee the coordination of Union Ministers as they take their places on stage.
A Historic Day for Haryana
As Haryana prepares to welcome its new Chief Minister, all eyes are on the BJP leadership. With Amit Shah and the central leadership playing a pivotal role, the transition of power is expected to be smooth and without any internal conflict. Naib Singh Saini, having earned the trust and backing of the party’s top brass, is poised to lead the state into the future with the support of both the BJP MLAs and the central leadership.
This upcoming government formation marks a significant chapter in Haryana’s political history, with the BJP firmly in control and set to shape the state’s policies for the foreseeable future.
